William Whitaker has played an influential role in British chocolate manufacturing for more than four decades, combining traditional craftsmanship with manufacturing innovation, commercial development and a commitment to preserving an established confectionery business.
As fourth-generation Managing Director of Whitakers Chocolates, founded in Yorkshire in 1889, he has helped transform the family business into an internationally recognised chocolate manufacturer. Having joined his father John in 1980, Whitaker has overseen substantial developments in production technology, product diversification and international distribution.
Today, the company’s Yorkshire manufacturing facility produces more than 10 million chocolates weekly, supplying retail, wholesale, private-label and foodservice customers.
Advancing Chocolate Manufacturing and Innovation
Throughout his career, Whitaker has recognised the importance of combining traditional chocolate-making expertise with modern production capabilities.
Working alongside his father, he helped pioneer individually foil-wrapped confectionery during the 1980s, introducing fondant creams, truffles and chocolate Neapolitans that became integral to the company’s product portfolio.
His commitment to innovation continues. In 2025, Whitakers Chocolates commissioned a dedicated nut-processing facility at its Skipton site, supporting the launch of double-enrobed Milk Chocolate Brazil Nuts and creating opportunities for further product development.
The investment reflects his determination to strengthen manufacturing capabilities despite considerable volatility in cocoa markets.
Whitaker has also supported the company’s development of Fairtrade cocoa products, palm oil-free chocolates and recyclable packaging solutions, responding to changing consumer expectations.
Securing the Future of Confectionery Craftsmanship
One of Whitaker’s most significant achievements came in January 2025, when Whitakers Chocolates joined Bramble Foods Group following more than 135 years of family ownership.
The acquisition represented an important strategic decision, securing opportunities for investment, commercial expansion and the preservation of the company’s manufacturing heritage.
Remaining Managing Director, Whitaker continues to guide the business while maintaining its longstanding commitment to quality, craftsmanship and its workforce.
His contribution was also recognised when Whitakers Chocolates received silver at the 2019 National Family Business Awards.
Through decades of leadership, manufacturing investment and business development, William Whitaker has helped preserve an important British chocolate-making legacy while positioning the company for future growth.
His achievements make him a compelling candidate for International Confectionery Industry Champion.
