In this exclusive interview, International Confectionery Senior Editor Joseph Clarke speaks with Abbie, a product developer at Monty Bojangles.
How did you end up in this industry?
I studied Food and Nutrition at university because I was intrigued by the sheer volume of food products and brands we see stocked on supermarket shelves. I wanted to understand what goes on behind the scenes to sustain such a mammoth industry. I also recognised that food sustains all life around the world, making it an industry with real purpose, endless opportunities and enduring relevance.
What do you like most about your job?
The creativity. Whenever anyone asks me this question, my answer is always the same. I have always had a strong creative streak, and actively engaging with it brings me a lot of joy and fulfilment. Whether it’s the artwork development stages, product ideation, or the creativity involved in problem-solving.
What is your favourite sweet?
I have always had a soft spot for Fry’s Turkish Delight ever since I was a child!
Who did you look up to as a child, and why?
Steve Irwin, for his enthusiasm, dedication and unwavering care and respect for animals and the natural environment – and his humour too!
How do you define success?
I believe it’s the feeling of happiness and fulfilment. I also think our individual perception of success changes with the different stages of life.
How would your friends or family describe you?
A difficult question to answer without their input! So here it is: my friend Mo said she would describe me as “fun, kind, thoughtful, smart, funny and outgoing”. I would truly say the same about her too – my university sister!
What are you most looking forward to this summer?
I have made lots of plans with friends and family throughout the summer, from dinners to booking musicals and shows like Titanique and Frank Sinatra and even more rogue plans like glamping at Alan Carr’s castle in Scotland!
What other job would you like to try, and why?
An art restorer, as I believe I would love the detail and processes involved, the specialist knowledge I would need to have, and the ability to reveal the true colours of paintings that have lost their light.
Name three things you couldn’t do without.
My family, my friends and sunshine!
How do you like to spend a Sunday afternoon?
I like to try and be restful to prepare for the week ahead, with some good food and relaxing company. If the sun is out, a pub garden with family and our dogs!
