BENEO’s Isomalt is a naturally sourced sugar replacer that combines strong technical performance with sensory quality, visual appeal and formulation flexibility. Derived from pure sugar beet, it is particularly suited to sugar-free confectionery and is widely used in hard-boiled candies, compressed mints, chewing gum, chewy candies, coatings and lollipops.

Its value lies not simply in replacing sugar, but in helping manufacturers maintain many of the characteristics consumers expect from conventional confectionery. With a similar organoleptic profile to sugar and around half the sweetness of sucrose, Isomalt supports formulations with a natural taste profile and virtually no cooling effect. This clean, neutral taste makes it particularly suitable for flavour-sensitive applications, including fruity or ‘warm’ flavours, such as caramel. When combined with high-intensity sweeteners, it can also create a synergistic sweetness profile without undesirable taste or aftertaste.

Supporting stability, taste and texture

One of Isomalt’s key technical advantages is its very low hygroscopicity. It has a lower hygroscopicity than most polyols and significantly lower hygroscopicity than sugar, absorbing practically no moisture at room temperature and even at relatively high humidity levels.

This helps prevent hard-boiled candies and compressed mints from becoming sticky or moist, supporting longer shelf life and even allowing unwrapped products to be packaged together. Its low moisture absorption also helps maintain the crunchiness of coated applications.

Isomalt can additionally improve the overall eating experience. Its low solubility can improve flavour retention and extend enjoyment in applications such as sugar-free chewing gum and fruit-flavoured hard candies.

In candies and lollipops, Isomalt contributes to a smooth surface and helps maintain an attractive appearance throughout shelf life.

Enabling visually striking confectionery

Isomalt also brings important visual and processing advantages. Unlike some other polyols, it can significantly contribute to brilliant colours in coatings for applications including sugar-free chewing gum and chewy candies, while its clarity enables manufacturers to produce transparent, visually attractive hard-boiled candies and lollipops.

BENEO’s latest Sweets Box illustrates how these properties can support contemporary confectionery innovation. Concepts including Yuzu & Matcha Liquid Filled Candy, Caramel Coffee Candy and Energy Drink Candy demonstrate how Isomalt can be used to combine sugar-free formulation with distinctive flavours, fillings, functionality, colour and multi-sensory appeal.
BENEO also offers different Isomalt ingredient types with varying levels of solubility, granulometry and application-specific profiles, giving manufacturers flexibility to select the most appropriate solution for individual products.

Together, these characteristics position Isomalt as much more than a sugar replacer. It is a versatile confectionery ingredient that supports shelf life, flavour delivery, texture, visual quality and processing performance while enabling manufacturers to develop modern sugar-free products without compromising the consumer experience.
