Sweet Talk – Olaf Schepel

In this exclusive Sweet Talk interview, International Confectionery Magazine gets to know Olaf Schepel, Sales and Marketing Manager, CAOTECH

What do you most like about your job/industry?

What I like about the industry is it has a very long history and it has certain traditions. I also like the fact that across the globe chocolate is part of many cultures, so I enjoy being a part of that.

Sweet or savoury – what’s your go-to snack?

I am probably more of a savoury person – Crisps would be my go-to snack

What’s one thing you can’t work without? Why?

I wouldn’t be able to work without my colleagues because I like to be motivated by them and for us to learn from each other.

Are you a morning thinker or a night owl?

Night owl – I am a bit of a slow starter in the morning but active in the afternoon and evening.

What book, film or podcast has inspired you recently? Why?

I really enjoyed La Vita e Bella (Life is Beautiful) because the main character creates a world for his child which seems like a game in order to disguise the pain and suffering going on around them. I really like this storyline.

What’s your favourite hobby?

My favourite hobby is gardening. I enjoy maintaining and watching the plants grow. It also gives me peace of mind.

What’s one word your colleagues would use to describe you?

Reliable.

If you weren’t working in confectionery, what would you be doing?

I would be working as an architect as I’m really fond of both modern and historic buildings.

What’s your proudest professional moment so far?

When I saw our first big project come to fruition – a deal between ourselves and a company in Brazil.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your career?

That I need to be patient and have faith in my goals being reached.
