A partnership between chocolate company The Blommer Chocolate Company and Satelligence marks a new milestone in the company’s sustainability strategy, as it looks to tackle deforestation in its supply chain.

Blommer, which is owned by Fuji Oil Group, welcomes the partnership as a step towards its sustainability strategy. In the partnership, Satelligence’s analysis will allow the company to capture carbon and gain insights which will inform its roadmap on reducing carbon emissions. It will also help Blommer to tackle deforestation in its supply chain and reduce the risk.

The range of Satelligence’s platform is incredibly helpful for Blommer, as its assessment covers up to 50,000km across cocoa producing countries including Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Ecuador.

This is not Satelligence’s first foray into providing insights for a cocoa and chocolate company, as it has previously worked with Mondelēz International, to provide the company with traceable and forest monitored palm oil from mills across their supply chain, which included traceability to plantation and satellite monitoring; it has also worked with Olam Cocoa whose targets revolved around establishing a sustainable and deforestation-free supply chain of cocoa, who made use of Satelligence’s satellite-based historical and real-time forest land cover and deforestation monitoring services.

To help Blommer with the analysis needed to reduce carbon emissions, Satelligence uses a combination of satellite imagery, AI algorithms and data gathered on cocoa farms. The data collected will show Blommer insights related to carbon loss and gain, risk levels for deforestation, canopy cover change and carbon sequestration.

The pressure put on cocoa and chocolate companies has risen in recent months as the EU announced legislation which will address global deforestation and forest degradation, as companies who place commodities on the EU market (including cocoa, palm oil, coffee and rubber) will have to conduct strict due diligence proving the products aren’t linked to deforestation.
