Mars has introduced a new collaboration to tackle wrapper waste this coming Halloween season. Working with digital waste and recycling provider Rubicon Technologies, Mars will be offering recyclable trick or treating bags throughout October as an expansion of Rubicon’s Trick or Trash campaign.

The combination of both companies’ expertise will provide those who celebrate Halloween with a simple way to address wrapper waste. Trick-or-treat bags will be provided with a postage stamp and three-step instructions on how to return it for proper recycling. Once the bags are returned, the bag and wrappers inside are recycled for future use.

“Over the past few years, Mars has made sure consumers can celebrate their most loved Halloween traditions, like trick-or-treating, with innovations such as ‘Treat Town™’ in 2020 and Shipt candy formula in 2021,” explained Tim LeBel, Chief Halloween Officer and President of Sales at Mars Wrigley. “This year, our Halloween leadership highlights Mars’ commitment to a healthy planet by providing a simple way to minimise packaging waste with the Mars and Rubicon Trick or Trash bags.”

93% of Americans are expected to celebrate Halloween this year, according to the National Confectioners Association (NCA). However, research conducted by Rubicon shows the vast majority of wrappers from 600 million pounds of candy bought in the US ends up in landfill, often as a consequence of limited recycling programs. Since 2019, Rubicon has provided schools, small businesses and organisations with free wrapper recycling boxers to tackle Halloween wrapper waste in its Trick or Trash campaign.

“Rubicon shares Mars’ commitment to creating a more sustainable future and we are proud to expand our Trick or Trash program this Halloween alongside one another,” said Nate Morris, Chairman and CEO of Rubicon. “We know that working with a variety of partners across industries is essential to keeping as much waste out of landfills as possible and we are proud to collaborate with Mars.”

The Trick or Trash bags are available to order on Mars’ Halloween online store starting the 5 October 2022.
