In this latest Sweet Talk interview, we get to know Jennifer Toomey, Head of Product, North America for TopGum…
What do you enjoy about your job?
Product development is such a dynamic job. I love solving problems, and in product development, you have the opportunity to bring our customers’ wishes to life in a healthy, delicious way. The best part of it is developing functional/better for you gummies that contributes to one’s wellness and healthier lifestyle, while being really tasty.
What attracted you to the industry?
When I graduated from University, I had a degree in nutrition, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it. I started working at a small natural VMS brand in the northeastern US, and I fell in love with the fast-paced environment and that I could make one product that could improve the health of 1,000s of people at one time.
How would your friends describe you?
This is a tough one. I like to think that I am a good listener and that I care deeply about my friends’ and their happiness. They also know that I have their backs no matter what.
Who did you admire growing up and why?
Like many children I looked up to my parents. They were small business owners that worked very hard to make sure that my brothers and I always had what we needed in a house full of love and support. No matter how busy they were, they were always there when we needed them. That is still the case now that we are all adults.
What’s one new skill you’d like to learn?
I would like to learn how to play the drums. Ever since I saw Lenny Kravitz’s music video for ‘Are you gonna go my way?’, I have wanted to learn to play the drums.
Name one thing you couldn’t live without…
My family-my husband, 3 children, and my dog, Wilson.
What’s your favourite way to spend a Sunday afternoon?
In the summer, I am out in my vegetable garden weeding, watering, and harvesting the veggies. The growing season is relatively short here in the northeastern part of the US, so you have to make the most of it.
How do you define success?
Success is moving the team forward. Regardless of what that team is, real success is everyone moving forward together.
Where would you like to live if not in the US? Why?
I would choose Italy. Specifically, Rome or southern Italy. My mother’s family is from Italy, and there is something so beautiful about the culture, the food (!), and the landscape that feels so welcoming. I can imagine myself having a huge garden!
How do you hope to spend your retirement?
I hope to spend my retirement traveling and spending time with my family. There are so many beautiful, interesting places in the world, I would like to see them and share the experiences with the ones that I love.
