World Cocoa Foundation launches cocoa production initiatives

The World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) has unveiled a series of new initiatives aimed at enhancing the sustainability of cocoa production. These developments include a pioneering methodology for measuring cocoa household income, a strategic partnership for decarbonisation, and concerted efforts to tackle deforestation. This proactive approach aligns with the foundation’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and equitable cocoa sector.

Innovative Cocoa Household Income Measurement
In collaboration with KIT, Wageningen University & Research, and other partners, WCF has introduced a pilot project to establish a new standard for measuring cocoa household income. This methodology aims to improve the accuracy of sampling and representation, ensuring a fair assessment of farmers’ livelihoods. WCF experts have been instrumental in developing this initiative, which seeks to provide more precise data to support policy and business decisions that benefit cocoa farmers.

Aligning Business with Social Impact
Mawuli Coffie, WCF’s Country Director for Ghana, emphasises the importance of integrating business objectives with social impact in the cocoa sector. Drawing from over two decades of experience in international development and business management, Coffie remarks, “Development initiatives succeed only when business-oriented solutions are applied.” His insights highlight the evolving role of the private sector in driving sustainable development, particularly in regions like Ghana, where cocoa is a critical industry.

Decarbonisation Efforts in Cocoa Production
To address the environmental impact of cocoa production, WCF has partnered with Quantis, an environmental sustainability consultancy. Together, they are developing a comprehensive greenhouse gas accounting methodology tailored to the cocoa sector. This initiative aims to standardise metrics for land use change, land management, carbon removals, and re-baselining. The goal is to facilitate accurate benchmarking and the adoption of best practices, enabling more informed and effective climate interventions across the sector.

Combatting Deforestation through Collaboration
Deforestation remains a significant challenge in cocoa-producing regions. The Cocoa & Forests Initiative (CFI), a collaborative effort involving cocoa companies, governments, and farmers in West Africa, is at the forefront of this battle. In a recent meeting held in Abidjan, chaired by Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister for Water and Forests, CFI partners reviewed their progress and outlined future steps. Chris Vincent, President of WCF, noted, “The results are encouraging, but much work remains to achieve our ambitious goals.”

Upcoming Agenda: Focus on Deforestation Risk Measurement
Looking ahead, WCF is preparing for a busy August. Key activities include engaging with governments to review the CFI’s 2023 progress and developing a new method to assess deforestation risks. These efforts underscore WCF’s ongoing commitment to sustainable practices in the cocoa industry.
