International Confectionery magazine talks to Jamie Lowe, Head of Sales, Ritter Sport UK about why he’s working in the confectionery industry and his favourite kind of chocolate.
What attracted you to this industry?
Confectionery is a fun category, and I love working with like-minded people looking to make a difference. It’s so fast paced and constantly changing.
What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Most recently, I have been particularly proud of working with the sales team to launch our fantastic brand in two major retailers. And then watching the brand grow and expand our distribution and widen the range to include new formats, such as different gifting opportunities and new ranges.
What’s your favourite kind of chocolate?
Without doubt, Ritter Sport Honey Salted Almond. I’m addicted to it and if it’s in the house it normally gets eaten within hours! So many attributes to our brand, but above all, taste, chunky texture, highest quality and sustainability.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
Our customers! There’s nothing better than meeting with our customers, closely collaborating with them to bring new products to market and staying close to the results afterwards. Despite most meetings being virtual these days, I love the feeling of arriving at a customers’ Head Office and meeting face to face.
What is a skill you would like to learn?
To be fluent in more languages, especially German and Spanish.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
To stay humble. I try and adopt the approach of being confident, but always to be measured and calm when we either have major successes or if the occasional thing goes wrong. Life is full of ups and downs, and I believe it’s how we respond to these challenges that defines us.
What’s the most interesting place you’ve visited?
Cape Town was incredible. Such a contrast of people and cultures and so much to see and do. To go up Table Mountain and experience Robben Island and its history was mind blowing.
What three items would you take with you to a desert island?
My phone (assuming there was wifi!), a selection of books and my running shoes
What’s your favourite genre of book or film?
I like the “classics”. My favourite book being “To Kill a Mockingbird”, and currently re-reading some Dickens novels which helps takes my mind off the day job!
Who or what inspires you?
My children! We have five kids, and they constantly inspire me with how talented and clever they are. I love hearing feedback from teachers and other parents and I’m always bursting with pride especially watching them play sports. They inspire me to be a better person, achieve better results and challenge myself.
