Mondelēz International has launched its latest economic and social report ‘Mondelēz UK: making the Right Impact’ which details the company’s economic contribution, said to total UK£933 million added to the UK economy.
The company currently supports 10,372 jobs across the UK with 4231 directly employed and 6141 indirectly supported. This is broken down into London, South East, South West, Wales, Yorkshire and the Humber, and the West Midlands. Of those regions, 2804 employees are directly employed in the West Midlands which comprises of the Bournville manufacturing plant, R&D hub, Marlbrook Dairy factory Minworth distribution centre.
The company doesn’t have any sites in the North West of England but says it contributes nearly £86 million and 1314 indirect jobs to the local economy through supply chain procurement and positive effects on regional income.
From 2012 to 2021 it invested £273 million into its five UK manufacturing sites: Bournville in Birmingham, Credition in Devon, Chirk in Wales, Marlbrook in Worcestershire and Sheffield in Yorkshire.
The Bournville factory hasbeen in operation for 110 years and in 2021 saw a further commitment of £15 million to upgrade the Dairy Milk tablet production and expand chocolate making capacity. Dairy Milk is made in Bournville which produces 5.5 million blocks of chocolate, 400 million chocolate buttons and one million Wispa bars in a single day.
In its support of communities, in 1935 the Cadbury Brothers established The Charitable Brothers Trust with the objective of helping to create prosperous communities. Over the past 10 years The Foundation reports to have spent 15.5 million supporting communities and sent to charitable organisations including Age UK, Fareshare, Community Shop, Trussell Trust Foodbanks, and others.

By investing in Bournville, Mondelēz is creating job opportunities for local people, and I look forward to seeing the next generation of talent benefiting from this apprenticeship programme in the months and years ahead,” concluded Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands.
The company is investing in UK apprenticships and training, with 13 PHD partnerships with research institutions across the country. Since 2017 Mondelēz has applied the UK Apprenticeship Levy to create new pathways, totalling an investment of £2.5 million. More than 600 food scientists, technologists and chemists are employed across its two R&D sites in Reading and Bournville.
