Latest innovations at Vitafoods

Latest innovations to be showcased at Vitafoods, which is running in Geneva 9-11 May 2023, include carob, from food tech start-up CarobWay and vegan gummies, exhibited by Solabia-Algatech Nutrition.

CarobWay, who spoke at Confectionery Live in January of this year, discussed the opportunities offered by carob as a natural sugar alternative for confectionery, and also as a sustainably grown ingredient. By using the entire fruit, seeds and pulp, the company ensures it is eliminating food waste in its supply chain and utilising the whole of the ingredient.

One formulation currently under development is its prebiotic powder, which contains fibres and polyphenols and is said to support a healthy gut microbiome. The start-up will be advancing a series of microbiome studies to explore the effect of its prebiotic on human microbiota. Visitors to its stand at Vitafoods will be able to taste carob-sweetened tea, chocolate gummy bears and confectionery fortified with prebiotic carob powder.

Solabia-Algatech Nutrition will be presenting two astaxanthin delivery systems, including a vegan gummy and a cold water-dispersible sachet. The company will introduce its astaxanthin whole-algae complex in a new gummy format. The vegan, pectin-based supplement comes in a cherry flavour containing 4mg of astaxanthin and 50mg of vitamin C.

The company cultivates functional microalgae, exploring their nutraceutical properties and producing microalgae products. The microalgae is cultivated in a closed, ecofriendly system, to ensure safety and purity with a minimal environmental footprint.
