CCL Industries divisions to unveil smart pouches at Fachpack 2024

CCL Industries has announced that its three divisions—Innovia, Checkpoint Systems, and CCL Label—will collaborate to present cutting-edge packaging solutions at Fachpack 2024. The event, which will be held in Nuremberg, Germany, from 24th to 26th September, will serve as a platform for the company to demonstrate its innovations in monomaterial flexible packaging and advanced RFID technology.

The collective presence at Fachpack 2024 will spotlight solutions designed to revolutionise packaging sustainability and recyclability, with a focus on materials that enable monomaterial pouch constructions. Additionally, the event will showcase printed premium pouches that are fully recyclable, marking a significant step forward in the packaging industry’s efforts to meet new environmental regulations.

Innovia will introduce film solutions that align with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). “We will showcase film solutions with built-in functionalities that enable the switch from multimaterial to monomaterial structures to make flexible packaging recyclable,” said Alasdair McEwen, who leads the packaging division of Innovia in Europe.

A major highlight will be the Encore portfolio, which includes films containing recycled content from diverse sources such as post-consumer mechanically recycled content, chemically recycled food-grade options, and recycled material from ocean plastics. These films are designed to help packaging companies and brands transition from linear to circular systems, in compliance with the PPWR’s mandate to integrate recycled post-consumer content into plastic packaging.

CCL Specialty Pouches will present its latest advancements in premium monomaterial pouches, particularly for liquid filling goods. “Pouches have several advantages over rigid packaging solutions—they are lightweight, material-efficient, and durable. However, pouches for liquid filling goods have traditionally been made from multimaterial constructions, which are challenging to recycle. Our new monomaterial constructions offer the same barrier properties and functionalities, available in both polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) versions, depending on the specific requirements,” explained Marco Lazzaroni, Sales & Business Development Director at CCL Specialty Pouches.

Lazzaroni emphasised the importance of these innovations in helping brands future-proof their packaging against the backdrop of upcoming PPWR legislation. The new pouches are expected to set a benchmark for sustainable packaging in the liquid goods sector.

Checkpoint Systems will present its latest smart packaging solutions tailored for various industries including retail, fashion, supply chain and logistics, food and beverage, and more.

By integrating RFID technology into packaging, Checkpoint aims to enhance supply chain efficiency through improved inventory visibility and real-time traceability. The technology also supports sustainability efforts by enabling detailed product information retrieval at the item level, which aids in quality control and promotes a circular economy through reusable packaging.

In the food sector, Checkpoint’s RFID labels will be highlighted for their role in advancing food safety and reducing waste. By providing real-time data on product handling and expiration dates, these labels ensure precise traceability, thereby contributing to improved food safety standards.
