Sales of vegan ice cream to grow in Veganuary

Sales of vegan ice cream are expected to increase this January according to BDSI, Germany’s confectionery trade body, as ‘Veganuary’ comes around again, an annual event which encourages people to follow a vegan lifestyle every January.

BDSI has also reported that vegan ice cream is enjoying increased popularity in Germany. According to information released by market research company NielsenIQ, sales in German food retail for multipacks and household packs continued to increase in 2022. From around EU€75 million in 2020 to €81 million in 2021, sales of vegan ice cream have risen to €88 million in 2022.

Additionally, the market share in the ice cream section of the German trade measured by sales has developed from 4.3% to 4.9% in the same period.

According to BDSI, the consumer is now “spoiled for choice” when it comes to ice cream on the market. There is a wide range of vegan ice cream, ranging from classic brands to private label manufacturers, but also from several start-ups.

The basis for plant-based ice cream variants can be almonds, oats, peas or soy. As a protein alternative – as opposed to milk protein – vegan ice cream can contain pea protein.

Veganuary grows in popularity, as UK-based non profit organisation Veganuary mobilised over 629,000 people in over 200 countries and regions to adopt a vegan diet in its campaign in January 2022.
