Come early summer 2018, and Hammond’s Candies will have closed down the Old Dominion Peanut Company’s manufacturing facility, which is located in Norfolk, Virginia.
Following a six month analysis of the company’s current operations and future needs of their customers, Hammond’s came to the decision to close the plant. The company also said that the move came in the wake of “the neighborhood in transition from manufacturing and warehousing, to retail and upscale residential apartments, higher operating costs, and lack of efficiencies operating out of multiple buildings.”
The company themselves are based in Colorado, and produce a wide range of sugar confectionery products, along with chocolate. In 2013, Hammond’s successfully acquired Old Dominion Peanut in an attempt to expand their snack offerings.
Speaking on the matter, Andrew Schuman – president and CEO of Hammond’s Candies – was sad that it had come to this given that Old Dominion Peanut has been in operation for over a century, and felt for his employees.
“Business decisions that directly impact our employees are extremely difficult,” he said. “The plant closure does not reflect the end of the Old Dominion Peanut Company, rather it marks the beginning of the next chapter of our business operations for long-term health.”
